If you only care about changed posts, you can view by discussion in the top. It'll sort posts in order of they were posted / commented so things are shown in the order that they were last touched. I'll look for a way to display the date / time posts were made at the category level but preliminary searches bring up nothing...

I've turned on the feature to allow marking everything as read. You should be able to do that from the top header now.
